Career of Evil: 2 Stars

  • The severed leg is delivered, the horror begins .....
I really liked the first in series, The Cuckoos Calling, even though it was a bit dark for my taste. The second book: The Silkworm, I found disappointing, now this, the third in the series I found to be simply distasteful and silly.
  • There is a lot of grim, dark and deviant goings on, too much for me, it is as if some of it was plonked in merely for shock value. Much of it seemed superfluous to the story, but maybe the author just enjoys writing about the macabre, I know that plenty of people enjoy reading that stuff.
  • Strikes character changes in this book and I, who was so fond of that character especially with his Cornish background and interesting family, now find him slightly farcical, especially so at the end of the book.
  • It is an unnecessarily long book, nearly eighteen hours but I did finish it, judicious editing of waffle could probably cut that back to eight. No, there won't be anymore Cormoran Strike books for me.

  • Narrator
  • Robert Glenister does a great job with Strikes' accent, which is that of a man raised in Cornwall but who has lived his adult years in England. He also does an excellent deep, dark, evil and creepy voice, I had no issues with his accents or voices at all, but maybe he didn't much like the story either because some of it just sounded a bit off-hand, as if he were a little bit bored with it all. Well, it did go on a bit! However, it is a really good quality production.

    Publishers Summary
Private Investigator Edwina "Eddie Shoes" Schultz's most recent job has her parked outside a seedy Bellingham hotel, photographing her quarry as he kisses his mistress goodbye. This is the last anyone will see of the woman...alive. Her body is later found dumped in an abandoned building. Eddie's client, Kendra Hallings, disappears soon after. Eddie hates to be stiffed for her fee, but she has to wonder if Kendra could be in trouble too. Or is she the killer?
Eddie usually balks at matters requiring a gun, but before she knows it, she is knee-deep in dangerous company, spurred on by her card-counting adrenaline-junkie mother who has shown up on her doorstep fresh from the shenanigans that got her kicked out of Vegas. Chava is only 16 years older than Eddie and sadly lacking in parenting skills. Her unique areas of expertise, however, prove to be helpful in ways Eddie can't deny, making it hard to stop Chava from tagging along.
Also investigating the homicide is Detective Chance Parker, new to Bellingham's Major Crimes unit, but no stranger to Eddie. Their history as a couple back in Seattle is one more kink in a chain of complications, making Eddie's case more frustrating and perilous with each tick of the clock.

    Review
This is great start to a new series, Edwina Schultz was right to change her name "Eddie Shoes" is a far more appropriate and cool name for a Private Investigator. She herself is cool and feisty, but she isn't one of those hard headed female P.I.s who are always making ridiculous choices that land them in predictably dangerous situations.

I enjoyed the plot, being a relatively short book it moves along at quite a pace which keeps the reader interested.
Eddie gets a lot more than she bargained for when she takes on the case of the wronged wife looking for hard evidence of her husbands infidelity. When Kendra, the mistress, turns up dead the action starts.

Just to add to Eddies problems Chava, her mother turns up. Chava, being a mere 16 years older than her daughter, has not been the most motherly of mothers. Now she has got herself in to a bit of a fix and needs a roof over her head for a while and decides to visit her daughter. She is a wonderfully written character, quirky and just as feisty as her daughter bringing a whole new and interesting dynamic to the story. I hope she stays around a long time as I loved reading about their evolving relationship.

Later in the story a mysterious hero comes to Eddies rescue, a fabulous chap, a real big fella whom I'm pretty sure we will all come to love.

I thought that this was a thoroughly enjoyable story, well written with fresh and interesting characters, hopefully this is the first of a nice long series.

    Narrator
Moira Driscoll was an excellent choice for this book, she gave each character a distinctive and easily identifiable voice. I thought she captured Eddies character perfectly, lively and feisty when appropriate, I especially appreciated how she conveyed all the hidden undercurrents of emotion in the relationship between Eddie and Chava. An all round high quality production.

    Family Matters: Harry Starke 6

    Review
Despite being the 6th Harry Starke book this one is a standalone read and is completely different to preceding books.
Harry and Amanda are in Maine, her grandmother has died, leaving her worldly goods to Amanda, her inheritance includes a large house, money and a mysterious small wooden box. Grandmother also requested that Amanda takes a fresh look at the unexplained disappearance of Elizabeth, her great-great-great grandmother.

Harry and Amanda discover that the house had been turned in to an hotel run by a manager, his wife and a handyman. Deciding to pay a visit, they travel to the remote and lonely part of Maine where they are the only guests at the spooky hotel.

Strange things happen in the middle of the night and Amanda is convinced that the rumours are true, the house is haunted! the more prosaic Harry dismisses it all as being nothing but hoo-ha. Amanda wants him to investigate the ghostly deeds and to also investigate the case of missing Elizabeth. Harry eventually agrees if only to placate her, Amanda gets an inheritance and Harry gets a cold, cold case.

I loved the setting, the spooky hotel in a wild and lonely area; the disturbing portrait of Elizabeth that was so much more than just a portrait; the strange hotel manager and that dark, dark cellar. I loved the mysterious box too!

As I listened to the beginning of the story I began to think I was in the wrong book, it is so different to any other "Harry", but it is a beginning that will suck you right in to the story, the mysteries, the ghosts, the funny parts and the ..... well, you will just have to listen to or read the great ending for yourself.

    Narrator
Another wonderful read from Tom Lennon, he certainly has the knack of getting the listener so involved in the story that you can barely drag yourself away. He does a pretty good "exasperated" tone when he can't convince Amanda that ghosts do not exist, and then his response when Amanda plays a little trick on him in the cellar, well that part is a real "serves you right" moment that Tom plays to perfection.

For more than ten years, she lay beneath the floorboards of Hill House. For more than ten years, she waited. Who was she? Who put her there? Why? Harry Starke vows to find the answers to those questions, but to do so he must embark upon an investigation that will put him and those close to him in deadly danger, take him deep into the underground city, the Dark Web, murder, organized crime, prostitution, and human trafficking.

      Review

The beginning of this book is very atmospheric and just a little bit dark and it hooked me in straight away. Hill House was about to be demolished, some young fellas go in to help themselves to the floorboards hoping to make a bit of money by selling them. A grisly discovery is made. A body is found under the boards. The body has been there for some time and doesn't fit any of the missing persons descriptions.

They find out that the old house was once a shelter for young people, but it's not as simple as tracing the owners. The investigations lead Harry and the police into some very disturbing situations involving some very dark and disturbing people. Yet even these people aren't quite as they seem.

Harry comes up against an old adversary and things get violent, he is upset because his work has put his staff at risk of injury or worse. The way he deals with this particular situation gives us some real hard boiled "Harry Starke" moments, quite hair raising at times.

Harry continues to work well with his former girlfriend the police officer Kate and I really enjoy the way she treats him, as usual, Harrys love life is perplexing him, he continues to get himself into some awkward "romantic" situations. There are some wonderfully witty interactions between Kate and Harrys newer interest, Amanda, and in this book, Amanda really steps up to the mark maybe compensating for her past mischief making.

Each one of the Harry Starke novels has a unique plot and can from that point of view be read as a standalone, but I would recommend reading them all so as to get to know the characters. It's not essential, I know, but I've enjoyed following the Kate and Amanda situation evolve, and I'm also very interested in the characters who make up Harrys staff, in each book these characters have been fleshed out a little more.

The author has given his readers yet another excellent story.

      Narrator

Another riveting performance by Tom Lennon who is, in my opinion, the perfect Harry. He gives each character a distinct and easily identifiable voice, something which is so important to the listener. I look forward to many more Harry Starke adventures

    Review

If you have ever watched the T.V. series Walker, Texas Ranger also written by John Lansing, then you will already know that he can write a darned good story. This is action, all the way from the beginning to the exciting climax

Hollywood producer George Litton wants to make a movie based on one of Jacks recent cases, he employs Jack as both technical advisor and protector of the female lead, Susan Blake who has a cyber stalker. Jack Bertolino, P.I. and retired police officer enters the world of Hollywood and movie making.

The film action starts on set, but a real life tragedy occurs nearby, a six year old little girl is shot dead in her own home, at the same time outside her house a drug dealer is also shot dead. At first, it looks like a drive by shooting, but the reader will know the truth from the beginning.

The shooter is a cold hearted, chilling villain but he feels justified, he "never killed a man who didn't need killing", but killing the child was a mishap, he regretted it but seemed more concerned that the murder of a child could create more problems for him and his brothers. Child murder motivated the police like no other crime, if he was caught it might also lead the police to his brothers. Add drug running to the mix and Jack Bertolino has his hands full.

I missed the second book in this series, but the author adds enough backstory for the reader to be informed. Despite the fact that there is an awful lot going on in this book the author never leaves the reader feeling confused as to what's happening, the writing flows beautifully.

The ending is very exhilarating and builds to a tremendous crescendo of excitement. It's a little too action packed though for my particular tastes, and I did find parts of the storyline to be quite chilling, but I highly recommend it to those who love a multi layered fast moving, filled to the brim adventure.

      Summary

Why did Tabitha Willard throw herself off the Walnut Street Bridge?
It's almost midnight, bitterly cold and snowing, when a beautiful young girl, Tabitha Willard, throws herself off the Walnut Street Bridge into the icy waters of the Tennessee. Harry Starke is there, on the bridge. Wrong time, wrong place? Maybe. He tries but is unable to stop her. Thus begins a series of events and an investigation that involves a local United States congressman, a senior lady senator from Boston, a local crime boss, several very nasty individuals, sex, extortion, high finance, corruption, and three murders. Harry has to work his way through a web of deceit and corruption until finally...Well, as always, there's a twist in the tale - several in fact.
      Who is Harry Starke?
Harry Starke is a private detective, a big fish in a small pond. He's a tough individual with a past, a conscience, and friends in high places. He's single, successful, wealthy, a womanizer, well-educated, and he will hurt you if he needs to. This book is the first in the series of Harry Starke novels.

      Review

First of all, despite sex and violence being mentioned in the blurb I don't believe many would find it too disturbing or distasteful to read, it's all pretty mild stuff.

Harry had tried to save the girl, his efforts failed. While he was waiting for the police to arrive he did what any P.I. would do, he went through her handbag, what he found there among the contents aroused his curiosity.
Though everybody agreed that Tabitha had taken her own life, nobody could offer a reason for why she would do such a thing. Harry, feeling that something bad was going on made it his business to find out what had driven her to such desperate measures. Little could anyone know of how complex and twisted the road to truth would become!

Harry has contacts, lots of them, good people and bad people and he makes full use of them all, including his wealthy father. These diverse characters makes for some interesting interactions which, in turn, makes good reading. I'm not quite sure what to make of Harry as he comes across as a really nice guy with that Southern gentlemanly way of speaking, yet he seems to have no qualms about using a bit of violence against those who cross him.

There's a bit of complicated romancing going on in Harrys' life too, it's almost off with the old love and almost on with the new. Believe me, he met one of his ladies in a most unusual and interesting way.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book as it's the really good and solid type of P.I. fiction that I love and I intend to read more, it will be interesting to discover a little of Harrys' true character, and read more of his adventures.

      Narrator

I don't know who chose Tom Lennon to play Harry, but they could not have made a better choice. I can't fault him, the pace and rhythmn were spot on and he has one of those voices and way of speaking that could convince you of anything. He certainly has mastered the art of nuance, with just the subtlest change in speech Harry goes from friendly guy to your worst enemy, and it's this smallest change of delivery that creates such authenticity. Fabulous narration, Tom Lennon aced this high quality production.

      My Review

This is the second book in the Jason Callahan series, in the first book, during the course of an investigation he meets the beautiful, flamboyant and psychic Trina Dane and together they solve the case. In this, their second case, Trina approaches Jason, asking him to go with her to Florida to look in to the strange story of Chloe Marsh. Chloe had been killed in an accident, yet seemingly miraculously came back to life. She undergoes some very strange changes and develops supernatural powers that nobody can account for.
    • The story revolves around the efforts of Trina and Jason to discover how to rid Chloe of what they believe is a spirit, they discover that others who had fallen victim to this spirit had eventually died .... except one. They must discover how and why he survived so that they might learn how to save Chloe from a certain death.

I had thoroughly enjoyed the first book, which was, in my opinion a 5 star read with huge potential for a cracking good series, sorry to say, but I don't feel this one lives up to that potential. What on earth has happened to Trina and Jason? It was like reading about two different characters, apart from a brief mention early in the book, gone was the flamboyance and wonderful personality of Trina. Jason lost his witty dry wisecracking personality, there was no spark between them at all, they were dull. Chloe was for me, the star of the show, I thought her character was the most enjoyable of the story.

      Narrator

I alway enjoy listening to Steven Jay Cohen, he does the job so well, characters are clearly and consistently defined. It's always a risk, I think, when a narrator takes over a series, and it's not something I am keen on, however, that's just my opinion.

Matanzas Bay Quint Mitchell series, 1

    My Review

Quint runs his one man P.I. Agency in St. Augustine, his working day assignments are more the mundane than exciting, yet in his private life, Quint is battling the torment of tragic Personal memories. He looks upon his volunteer role as an assistant to Dr. Jeffrey Poe, St. Augustines' archeologist, as a relief from both his work and his memories.

On a dig, he uncovers a casket containing the murdered remains of Vice Mayor Bill Marrano, his brother, Buck, is one of the detectives who arrive on the scene.

All evidence of guilt point to Dr. Poe who is arrested and charged with his murder. Quint, convinced of his friends' innocence, embarks on a mission to prove it.

There plenty of twists and turns here, in fact the story becomes quite convoluted and (for me) a little difficult to follow, I got a little lost with all the characters and their many secrets. It's a difficult listen when multitasking, a multi layered mystery such as this is probably not the best choice for my style of listening. The author included a goodly amount of historical fact regarding St. Augustine and also of Civil Rights issues, some of which is quite moving. Despite getting a bit lost at times, I found this quite an exciting tale, the tension is kept high and the listener is never quite sure if he is on the right trail. Just when I thought I'd cracked it something else came along to add another layer of intrigue.

All due respect to the author for bringing all the threads of this well written story together for an exciting finish.

    Narrator

Mike Dennis is new to me, I enjoyed the narration as his voice suits the role of a P.I., rough, tough and worldly! I couldn't fault his characterisations (and he had plenty to deal with) and his pace and timing are, I thought, excellent. There is a certain part of the book in which a man relates a very moving account of an incident which occurred in his younger days, Mike Dennis relays this beautifully, yet he doesn't overact. I thought he treated a particularly moving part of the story, where someone relates their suffering at the hands of others, quite beautifully.

Good sound quality and production made for a comfortable listening experience, I'd happily listen to more of Mike Dennis' work.

I received this audiobook free in return for this my honest opinion.

    My Review

I have to admit, I enjoyed this series more than I thought I would, there are loads of books out there of this genre, and we all know of the Ghost Whisperer on the TV. However, I haven't come across another where our hero works for Jesus and God, they are all usually pretty vague about that aspect, just being somewhat "spiritual" in nature.

First of all, I do wonder if the frequent references to Ministry, prayer and Jesus might not put some people off, but I can't see why it should, if they are non believers then why would they not merely accept it as fiction?

Secondly, I can appreciate how some Christians will enjoy the story because of the Christian slant, but it certainly might be a problem for others. I have some family members would not be happy at all, but I would simply echo the author, just enjoy it for what it is, a good story!

The story lines are well laid out in the publishers summary, I can't really add much to that without spoiling. I actually listened as if I had the three separate books, taking a break between them, I feel it would have been an overload of Christianity to listen for too long. However, that's a purely personal opinion, and I think listeners will be pleasantly surprised by these stories.

    Narrator

It did take a little while to get used to the narrators style, a little too "voiceover" at times, nevertheless, once I grew accustomed to it, it did not distract from the work

    My Review

I'd been looking for a long time, searching for a new Mystery / Crime series to enjoy. Then one day whilst browsing through Free Audiobook Giveaways (a Facebook group) there it was; amongst all the books about shifters, sliders vampires and sci fi, shining through like a diamond on a beach full of pebbles was The Offer: Kerry Wilkinsons' Something Wicked, offered by the narrator, Nigel Patterson in return for a review.
I knew I would like this story as soon as I heard Nigel Patterson acting the role of the radio announcer with the fake American accent. The next hook was the car pursuit of the wily and underestimated Stuart Deacon in his Audi, this was also my introduction to Andrew, the little bit seemingly boring P.I., and his lively assistant Jenny.
It would be difficult to add to the publishers blurb without spoilers, so I won't, but needless to say, there are many twists to this story. The beauty of it is though, is that this is the first story of a series, and as such, cleverly lays the foundations for future stories.
Now what about Jenny? Well, being the assistant to a private investigator, we know that she is bound by the laws of crime fiction to be clever and quick witted, and also to be very good with computers. She is all of these, yet Jenny is also a Very Odd Person, and I look forward to reading or listening to her story. Oh, and does she have a surname or is that a part of her mystery? I can't recall hearing one on my audiobook.
As for her boss, Andrew Hunter, seems he's a bit of a mystery himself. I quite liked him, but at one point in the story he really went down in my estimation. However, later, when he'd proved that he could man up, he redeemed himself! I'm very much looking forward to his future story.
I would never have believed I could like anything originating from the pen of a Sports Writer, but this is a thumping good story, tip top, and well suited to audio.

    Narrator Nigel Patterson

Much of the success of an audiobook is, of course, dependant on the quality of the narration. For me, the best of the best narrators are the one who, when within a few moments of listening, one just doesn't notice them any more. The voice is pleasant, the rythymn and pace is just right, as are the accents and characterisations. There is nothing to jolt the listener away from the story and back to reality. Surely, this is how it should be? Such is their talent, that they can make or break an audiobook. Nigel Patterson is up there with the best of them, I fervently hope that the author and publishers continue to work with him for all the Andrew Hunter Audiobooks.
You can go here to listen to his work and to also read an interview with Kerry Wilkinson: http://nigelpatterson.com
The author has himself a very interesting story to tell, you can go here to read it: http://kerrywilkinson.com

The Dead Mistress is the awful Sabina, whose rule over her exclusive little empire came to a nasty end, but ........... Who did it? Is the wrong man being lined up ready to take the blame? Susan thinks so which is good enough reason, she believes, to poke her perky little nose in everywhere it's not really wanted.
This is a short listen, and, despite a precarious plot is entertaining enough with some interesting insights to life in Academia. I look forward to discovering how Susan polishes up her sleuthing skills by consuming more of the series.
This was first published as a book a few years ago, and it certainly translates well to audio.
    Narrator
It takes but a few moments to realise that Barbara Benjamin- Cole is a well trained and experienced narrator, she did, in fact, enhance the story for me no end. Through her voice I enjoyed it so much more than I would have by only reading it. I'll certainly be looking out for her name.
I received a free copy of this audiobook in return for my honest review
